They burned the midwives first...

A call to protect midwifery care in our community.

Midwives provide safe, evidence based, patient centered care for women and families. They are more likely to support physiologic birth, reduce unnecessary interventions, and work collaboratively within hospital settings. For many families, midwifery care is not a luxury or a trend. It is the difference between feeling afraid and feeling held during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.

That is why the plan to eliminate Certified Nurse Midwives from Labor and Delivery at Rancho Springs Hospital in Murrieta matters so deeply.

I am sharing this as someone who has spent time working alongside women and families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I've seen birth in many different forms, and I have seen how deeply care models impact families during their most vulnerable moments.

Once care options are removed, they are rarely restored.

At a time when maternal health outcomes deserve more options, more compassion, and more collaboration, removing midwives from hospital based care moves us in the wrong direction.

Our community is responding. Here is how you can take action:

1. Share the information
Download and share the flyers. They include details about this local women’s healthcare issue and the upcoming peaceful protest. Sharing helps raise awareness beyond social media bubbles.

2. Attend the peaceful protest
Join the community. Your physical presence matters.

Letter Template to Personalize

Dear Mr. Giles,
My name is [Your name], and I am a [parent, expectant parent, former patient, birth worker, nurse, community member, etc.] in the Murrieta and Temecula Valley area.
I am writing to share my concern about the plan to eliminate Certified Nurse Midwives from the Labor and Delivery department at Rancho Springs Hospital.
In one or two sentences, share why this matters to you personally.
Examples:
A midwife supported my birth experience.
- I chose Rancho Springs because midwifery care was available.
- I value having options for physiologic and low intervention birth.
- I am concerned about reduced access to patient centered care.
Certified Nurse Midwives are highly trained professionals who provide safe, evidence based care and work collaboratively within hospital settings. Their presence supports positive outcomes, patient trust, and informed choice.
[Optional: Share what you value most about midwifery care or collaborative maternity care.]
Removing CNMs from Labor and Delivery would reduce care options for families in our community and represents a step away from patient centered healthcare at a time when maternal outcomes deserve thoughtful attention.
I respectfully ask that hospital leadership reconsider this decision and engage with the community members and providers who will be directly affected.
Thank you for your time and for listening to community voices.
Sincerely,

[Your name]
Optional: City, relationship to the hospital, or years in the community

This is what community care looks like. Not outrage for its own sake, but people paying attention and choosing to act with intention.

Midwives have always been held in community. This moment asks us to do the same.

Thank you for taking the time to read, reflect, and respond in whatever way feels accessible to you.

Xo, MM

MM May 20th It'd be better with you in it... ↓ My friend, Kim, once pointed out to me exactly how fleeting the magic of camp is. "Even if we continue to gather, year after year, the circle will never be exactly the same. Some women will drift away on to their own paths, new women will fill in the gaps." The truth is, the circle is forming with or without each and every one of us. And this one is almost complete. Enrollment for the ninth annual Spiritual Summer Camp closes this Friday at 10 pm...
